The year from August 2005 to August 2006 was one of
change and growth. We’ve made many decisions regarding the future of the Crystal
Lake Art Center as far as housing and moving forward with the possibility of remodeling
the Coast Guard Station into an art center. We have had many opportunities come our
way, and are proceeding cautiously and carefully but cheerfully to do the best thing
for the future of the art center.
In the fall of 2005 we saw the following occur:
Published a Benzie County Artist Directory
Considered the financial feasibility study from Willard
White in light of the Coast Guard Station
Hired Eliza Forrest to replace Alison Stow as assistant
to the Director
Appointed new Gift Shop Chairperson Judy McCall
Held first Autumn Audition juried competition which
was entered by 89 artists with 58 pieces chosen
Toured Michigan Legacy Art Park at Crystal Mountain
Received a demonstration mirror donated by Jackie
Fetts
Held Open Studio every Wednesday
Offered Ceramics for Frankfort high school students
with a reception for 200 people
Hired Quinn Evans | Architects to do a feasibility
study of Coast Guard Station
Raised money to pay architect through Founders Club
$1000 membership
Judged Children’s Christmas Card Contest for the Record

In 2006, we:
Expanded our knowledge when three board members and
Director Lee Harper traveled to the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs
annual meeting on linking culture, community, and the economy in Lansing. The group
also toured art centers in Midland
Held a Board Retreat at Betsie Bay Inn, lead by Director
Lee Harper
Had many meetings with Architect Mike Quinn and Project
Manager Ann Dilcher on the Coast Guard Station
Held many meetings with Fund Raising Advisory Committee
Received a MCACA Rural Arts Grant of $3,900 for our
first youth dance & visual arts residency in Benzie Central Schools
Offered, in March, A Night of Dance, the final performance
of our dance & visual arts residency, which was very successful for 150 third
graders
Toured Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey
Attended Grand Traverse Regional Foundation seminar
Held our first Artist Birthday Party for Leonardo
Da Vinci
Mailed a Members questionnaire to get input about
our future
Attended a Frankfort/Elberta Economic Development
meeting
Held our Annual Student Art Show
Displayed artwork at Crystal Mountain Resort, West
Michigan National Bank, and Benzonia Library
Hired Keith Schneider for focusing and writing about
the Coast Guard Station project
Received word that Congressman Pete Hoekstra won House
appropriation of $250,000 for the Coast Guard Station project. A vote is still pending
in the Senate.
Joined and met with Traverse Area Arts Council.
Held a Thank You and Update Party for the Founders
Club
Held our Studio Tour
Published Michigan Lake Shore Art Tour Brochure
Held our summer special events: Downtown Frankfort
Art Walk, Art in the Garden, Tables, Lamps and Chairs Auction
Offered a children’s booth at the Frankfort Art Fair
Offered a Fiber and Clay exhibit
Reached 100% Board and Staff committed to Coast Guard
Station project with pledges
Launched publicity of Coast Guard Station project
including a TV news segment
Offered our schedule of art workshops and classes
